Welcome to Fontleech
If you’re like me (and I’m counting on that), you’ve spent many a sleepless night scouring the web for free fonts that don’t suck. Undoubtedly, you’ve discovered that finding quality, free typefaces requires sifting through a lot of crap. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone did all that sifting for you?
Well that’s where Fontleech comes in. Every day we’ll tip you off to hidden gems from the free font world. We’ll be spotlighting the best foundries offering free typefaces. We’ll (hopefully) be bringing you interviews with some of the heavy hitters on the free font scene. We’ll be bringing you, uhhh… free font news.
And as we’re doing all that, we’ll be constantly building the best index of quality free font sites on the web. One of the problems with looking for free fonts is that there aren’t very many reliable resources out there for cheapskates. Pretty much every site you visit is trying to sell you something.
Which brings us to the Fontleech promise: we aren’t trying to sell you anything!
So go ahead and bookmark us and keep checking back. We’ll be hooking you up with some really good sites right off the bat. And if you’ve got a link that you think we might like, drop us a line at leech@fontleech.com.

Great idea! Just out of curiosity, what’s your criteria for “quality”? I’ll be checking in often….

If your definition of quality and mine match up in any way I can assure you I’ll be a regular visitor.
Fonts are like crack to me.

Good work! Like the poster above says, to get to free fonts you often have to swim through a river of crap. I look forward to seeing where this goes.

This is fantastic! It’s almost not worth the effort to sift through the crap-to-quality ratio of free fonts on the internet. Resources like this make me sing. Sing praises.

Hi - great idea! You’re presumably aware of the great Divide by Zero site, where there’s plenty of quirky and well designed fonts for you to download? Good.
Glad I got that off my chest.

Anyone know of a free Algerian Condensed substitute? I’ve searched the whole Internet, but found only the pay versions.
TIA!

Oh no! I’ve discovered a font blog! And I thought I’d cured my addiction to fonts! (I’d say that yes, I have a strong willpower, but no, I’ve already downloaded several of the fonts you’ve mentioned.) Fonts are bad m’kay! (Except they’re not! No, they’re lovely!)
Thanks for this blog, I think I’ll have to check it out frequently. Curses…

Excellent! I’m a font addict, and it’s great of you to sift through the crap and share the goodies. :)

This info is not exactly what you asked for; good luck finding a better answer if this is not enough. Hope it’ll help; sorry if it doesn’t.
The inexpensive ClickArt CD has 4 weights and styles of their Algerian look-alike, “Tangiers.” Quality varies on this disc. There are a number of legal lookalikes of “plain” Algerian you could condense mechanically, if your font editor is equal to that task:
Brendel/Canon’Greenstreet/Summitsoft “Saskatchewan”
Corel Bundle includes 2 Algerians, not condensed
Opti “Achilles”
SoftMaker “Alfredo”
MS Home Publishing includes an Algerian
Fontbank “Algemaria”
