Something’s Rotten in the State of Denmark

us.uvm.dk In a move that’s sure to spark international controversy, the Danish Ministry of Education has decided to pull their free font Union from the web, replacing it with a page of made up words. Now, I’m not the kind of guy who likes to throw the word “sanctions” around, but… I’m just saying.

Danes: if it’s bandwidth you’re worried about, maybe you could let someone else mirror the fonts? And seriously, try some diplomacy. The last thing we need is sparks flying around the Scandinavian powder keg!

From the page About the Reader-Friendly Font Union and Union Bold:

Fonten kan vederlagsfrit anvendes til opgaver på skærm og papir inden for Undervisningsministeriets område, med tydelig angivelse af copyright i publikationens kolofon. […]
Anvendelse af Union til opgaver uden for Undervisningsministeriets område kræver i hvert enkelt tilfælde forudgående aftale med Morten Rostgaard Olsen, Præstøgade 6, 2. sal tv, 2100 København Ø, på telefon 3543 1094 eller mro [at] mail.tele.dk.

The font can be freely used for work on screen or paper related to the Ministry’s area, but only with a clear copyright statement in the colophon. […]
All uses of Union for work outside the Ministry’s bailiwick require a talk with Morten Rostgaard Olsen.

The bold is in the original. My Danish is crap, perhaps someone else can provide a better translation - but it seems that the font was never intended for public distribution.

Did anyone download a copy of this font before the Danes pulled it?

perhaps you could email it to [ snip ]

I very much appreciate this!

Well, I can see why they’d be upset about us linking to a font that they never intended to distribute. At the same time, it’s pretty weird to post for-Danish-Education-Ministry-eyes-only stuff on the web where anyone can get to it.

Yeah - but then a lot of people rely on security through obscurity. They may have wanted it to be easy for teachers, etc. to find, without the bother of screening each request. How did you find the site in the first place, anyway?

Gah, this sucks… oh well. It seems like it was good while it lasted.

Phill / February 24, 2005 @ 2:42 pm

I just searched for union font and it came up.

Josh / February 24, 2005 @ 3:30 pm

I would love to see Union, if anybody would be so kind to email a copy to [ snip ].

Or if anyone can host it, alert fontleech, something so that we can have another chance at adding a new sans to our font assets.

Thanks

well, the minister of integration has blatantly stated Denmark does not like foreigners on numerous occassions. I am starting to see the connection here ….

Actually, my internet connection in Denmark really sucks. It’s fast at 2 MBps but we only get 1 gb of bandwidth a month for about $30 US. It makes even simple browsing hard since I do a lot of media things. Oh well.

I got it in PC TT and will upload it later this evening (on the way out the door for dinner now)

everybody:

please stop asking for this font. if it was never intended to be distributed, let’s not distribute it. my #1 rule of survival: don’t piss of the danes!

i deleted everyone’s email addresses from the comments, please don’t post anymore. sorry.

While you’re at it, Danes, why not help lower the prices of Lego bricks? Would it kill you?!

The font header notes that it’s from Agfa Montype (c) 2000, designed by Morten Rostgaard Olsen MDD.

But I don’t see it listed at www.fonts.com.

Justin Callaghan / March 3, 2005 @ 10:40 am

Interestingly, he released the same design commercially as FF Olsen.

ah, so the danish schoolteachers get a free ride while the rest of us have to dish out some hard-earned kroner!
