Typotek

It seems like I see the same half dozen grunge fonts over and over again. Not just on the web, but on crappy album covers, t-shirts and in video games. And the thing is, they suck. And believe me, I should know, I designed one of them (Uptown, which I apologize for. I was young.).
So how come I’ve never seen anyone use Cagna, by Typotek? It’s actually good. And it’s perfect for your roommate’s friend’s band’s non-profit organization’s website that you’ve been working on.
Those guys rock, by the way.
Update: For those of you who don’t speak French, you can head straight to Typotek’s download page.

I don’t know what your policy is regarding limited free use, but it bears pointing out that this font is only free for non-commercial use; it’s 23 Euros for commercial usage, which I assume my roomate’s friend’s band’s website would be considered. If they ever get a gig, anyway…

Uptown is good, it was just overused.

Damn, do I have to stop using Uptown now?
I always thought it was kinda nifty =/

I generally dislike the “grunge” fonts, because typing any character twice generally ruins the effect.
The random erasure or weight differences can work well for a typewriter font, to emulate the wear of the metal (”the E doesn’t work”), less so when it imitates a letterpress; this kind, with the random pen strokes through the characters, I just don’t understand at all.

telly: i share your complaint about grunge fonts, which is one of the main reasons i find cagna appealing. if you actually looked at the font you would see that the letters are actually devoid of the kind of defects you refer to. the “random pen strokes through the characters” really applies only to the numerals. the letters themselves are actually pretty clean.
and i’m pretty sure those aren’t pen strokes. i think they’re shadows (tilt your head).

That font would be good for one of those anti-scripting things (where a picture of letters and numbers is generated)…

Uptown was a great font!!! ; I still use it all the time…. too bad there weren’t more lightly-grungy-esque fonts like that around.

Well I, for one, couldn’t get it to install — something about “font is missing or damaged”. Internationalization issues, somehow?
I’m with telly, though. The basic problem with a font like this is that you can’t use the same character twice, at least not close together. When you do it’s like breaking the fourth wall.
