What is a font comparison tool?
A font comparison tool lets you preview multiple typefaces with the same content and typography settings so you can judge readability, personality, and technical fit before shipping. FontLeech's workbench adds variable-axis controls, OpenType toggles for parsed files, real-world scenario presets, and developer-friendly CSS export—not just static alphabet grids.
Compare fonts using your real content
Marketing headlines, navigation labels, and pricing strings expose different weaknesses than “The quick brown fox.” Switch scenarios for hero lines, body paragraphs, UI chrome, and dashboards, then paste your own copy.
Weight, spacing, and metrics
Adjust size, weight, line height, letter spacing, and container width in the control dock. Optional metric guides plot cap height, x-height, ascent, and descent from font tables—measured data, not guessed overlays.
Comparison vs identification
Identification answers “what is this typeface in my screenshot?” Comparison answers “which candidate works best for my project?” Identify a close match, then compare alternatives with your brand copy and exported CSS.

How is Font Comparison different from Font Identifier?
Font Identifier matches typefaces from an image using visual similarity across large catalogs. Font Comparison is a typography workbench: you choose fonts explicitly, set real copy, adjust weight and spacing, and evaluate side by side—including uploaded files and variable axes.
Can I compare more than two fonts?
Yes. Add up to six fonts in one session. Side-by-side view scrolls horizontally when you exceed three columns; stacked and grid modes help when comparing many specimens.
Are uploaded font files sent to FontLeech?
No. Uploaded TTF, OTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 files are read and parsed in your browser. They are not uploaded to our servers.
Why do catalog fonts load from Google?
When you pick a font from the built-in catalog, your browser requests the webfont files from Google Fonts so you can preview them. Uploaded and installed-font comparisons do not use that CDN unless you add a catalog font.
Can I share a comparison with a colleague?
Share links encode catalog font choices, sample text, and typography settings in the URL hash. Uploaded files and locally installed fonts are omitted from share URLs to protect commercial font data.
Why do two fonts look different at the same pixel size?
Type designers set different em squares, ascenders, cap heights, and default metrics. Pixel size sets the em box, not the perceived height of letters. Use metric guides and real UI copy—not only alphabet strings—to judge fit.
Does the tool support variable fonts?
Yes. Variable catalog fonts (such as Roboto Flex) expose axis sliders when axis metadata is available. Uploaded variable files read axes from the font’s fvar table in a Web Worker.
